DALLAS, TEXAS (Dec. 12, 2006) – The ‘hood comes alive
Saturday, February 3, 2007 with the fifth annual Art in the Hood
Studio Tour & Sale, a self-guided tour of 11 diverse artists’
studios in Dallas’ Pleasant Grove, Urbandale and Parkdale
neighborhoods. Hours are 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. The studio tour
is free and visitors of all ages are welcome.
Art in the Hood showcases the work of artists living in the southeast
quadrant of Dallas, along with an array of guest artists. Original
works on display will range from pottery, stained and blown glass
to painting, fiber arts, sculpture, jewelry, photography, furniture
and more.
Maps to the studios south of Interstate 30 and east of Fair Park
are available at the Art in the Hood web site, www.artinthehood.com.
The site also has information about the individual artists and photographs
of their work.
New to the tour this year is Ruben Glaucier. Studio R, located
in Balch Springs, features murals, tiles, and wall-reliefs. Classically
trained as a tenth generation European master craftsman, Mr. Glaucier
works in a myriad of materials such as stone, wood, and ceramic
creating unique classical and contemporary designs.
BA Glassworks, studio of glass artist Brad Abrams, invites several
guests including Leila Strauch, glass-fusing artist from Brazil.
Deanne Eskridge and Chris Lake will conduct glass-blowing demonstrations
throughout the day. Rene Lowery, metal sculptor, will complete the
line-up at BA Glassworks, located off Hwy. 175 & I-20/635.
Clustered within the Urbandale and Parkdale areas are several diverse
artists. Longtime resident Nancy Thompson will show her whimsical
and intricate mosaic glasswork. The multi-talented studios of Valery
Guignon & Robin Hawke feature fiber art and sculpture, along
with the altered photography of guest Patricia Dillingham. Across
the road is Urban Art Studio, studio of bronze and assemblage sculptor
Laura Abrams. Also exhibiting at this stop will be mixed media artist
Rita Barnard, and the colorful enameled glass and handmade beads
of Rasoul Khaliq, “The Sunshine Man”. Robyn Lark Wakefield
returns to the tour this year with her vibrant paintings and jewelry
at her Parkdale studio.
Nearby, in an area that once was the original pecan grove of ‘the
Grove’ with its lovely hills and trees, is the photography
studio of Roy Cirigliana. A photography instructor in the DFW area
for many years, Mr. Cirigliana’s unique brand of infrared
photography and welded steel frames are at once sensitive and rugged.
Heading south, off Lake June, is the ceramic studio of Mark Epstein
whose ceramics are beautiful as well as functional, featuring deep,
textured tones. Mr. Epstein, who is also an instructor in ceramics,
has been collected widely because of his high quality and style.
Continuing southeast, across from Samuell Crawford Memorial Park,
finds the talent of Niyada Crossland. Classically trained in Thailand,
Ms. Crossland will exhibit her elegant and contemporary paintings.
She invites guest jewelry artist Kimberly Washington.
Situated along the I-30 corridor, Providence Pottery, studio of
Carl Spoto presents his charming and practical designs as well as
art glass lamps and woodwork by Larry Pile.
Also along I-30 is the studio of sculptor Michael van Enter. Originally
from South Africa, his unusual blend of hammered copper and cast
bronze will be paired with the surreal, dream-inspired paintings
of Monique Jannette. For more information call 214-232-2206 or visit
